Wildlife Watching in the Wye Valley & Forest of Dean

The Wye Valley and Forest of Dean are home to an incredible variety of wildlife, and Doward Park Campsite sits right in the middle of it all. From kingfishers and peregrine falcons to deer, badgers and butterflies, there's always something to spot whether you're relaxing on the campsite or exploring the surrounding woodland. Even on the campsite itself you're almost guaranteed to see a variety of birds, many of which regularly visit our bird feeders and can often be spotted bathing near the wardens' caravan.

The best time to spot mammals is early morning or at dusk, when deer, foxes and badgers are at their most active.

On the campsite
Bird feeders, ancient woodland and our bug hotel all attract a variety of wildlife throughout the year.
Symonds Yat Rock
One of the best places in the UK to watch peregrine falcons, with goshawks sometimes seen over the surrounding forest.
King Arthur's Cave
Woodland birds, squirrels and deer are regularly spotted along the woodland paths.
River Wye
Look out for kingfishers, grey herons, mandarin ducks, swans and Canada geese.
Perfect for younger explorers
We also have a wildlife-themed adventure hunt around the campsite to encourage children to discover local nature, along with a bug hotel beside the play area. In reception you'll also find the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust's Wildlife of the Doward booklet.
Our tip: Take an early morning walk to Seven Sisters Viewpoint or King Arthur's Cave before breakfast. It's one of the quietest times of day, and your chances of spotting deer and woodland birds are much higher.
