Four Waterfalls Trail: Brecon Beacons

  • Jul 29
  • 2 min read

The Four Waterfalls Trail is one of the most spectacular walks in the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) and well worth the drive from Doward Park Campsite. This beautiful circular route takes you through ancient woodland and alongside the Afon Mellte and Afon Hepste, passing four impressive waterfalls—including the famous Sgwd yr Eira, where you can actually walk behind the cascading water. It's one of Wales' most iconic walks and a must for anyone who loves waterfalls, photography and adventure

📍 Drive: Around 1 hour

Best for: Walkers, photographers & nature lovers

🥾 Walk: 7–9 km circular (3–4 hours)

🌲 Combine with: Henrhyd Falls or Waterfall Country What will I see?

Sgwd Clun-Gwyn

The first waterfall on the route, tumbling over a series of rocky ledges surrounded by ancient woodland.

Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn

A beautiful multi-tiered waterfall just a short distance further along the trail.

Sgwd y Pannwr

A quieter waterfall hidden amongst the trees and one of the most peaceful spots on the walk.

Sgwd yr Eira

The highlight of the trail. A path passes directly behind the waterfall, giving you a unique perspective and one of the best photo opportunities in Wales.

How long does the walk take?

Allow 3–4 hours to complete the circular route, plus extra time for photographs, lunch and enjoying the waterfalls.

Is it suitable for children?

Older children who enjoy walking should have no problem completing the trail. There are lots of steps, uneven paths and some steep sections, so it isn't suitable for pushchairs.

Can I take my dog?

Yes, dogs are welcome, although they should be kept under control, especially near steep drops and around other walkers.

Is it difficult?

The route is considered moderately challenging because of the steep steps, uneven woodland paths and occasional muddy sections. Good walking boots are highly recommended.

Is there parking?

Yes. Most visitors start from Cwm Porth or Gwaun Hepste car parks, both of which provide easy access to the trail.

Our Tip

Visit on a weekday or arrive early in the morning if possible, as the Four Waterfalls Trail is one of the most popular walks in the Brecon Beacons and can become very busy during weekends and school holidays. Wear waterproof footwear, as you'll almost certainly get a little wet when walking behind Sgwd yr Eira! Recent hikers also report that starting early is the best way to enjoy quieter paths.
