Coppett Hill: A Must‑Do Walk for Families, Dogs & Nature Lovers

Coppett Hill is one of the standout gems of the Lower Wye Valley, and it’s right on the doorstep for families — and four‑legged explorers — staying at Doward Park Campsite.

Covering an impressive 98 hectares, much of the hill is a protected nature reserve, making it one of the largest in Herefordshire. It’s a wonderful place for children to roam, dogs to sniff out new scents, and grown‑ups to enjoy some of the best views in the valley.

Each season brings something special. In autumn, the sweet chestnuts, beeches, oaks, hawthorns and ash trees turn the whole hillside into a patchwork of golds and reds. Come spring, the woodland floor transforms into a vibrant blanket of bluebells — a magical sight for families walking together.

At the top, you’ll find a trig point at 188 metres. From here, you can take in sweeping views: Goodrich and the Black Mountains to the west, and Ross‑on‑Wye stretching towards the Malvern Hills and Shropshire to the north. It’s the kind of viewpoint where kids love to point out landmarks and dogs enjoy the breeze.

Whether you’re after a gentle family wander or a proper leg‑stretch with the dog, a hike up Coppett Hill is a must.
